It's about high performance, not mental skills
Knowing the difference is key to elevating your consulting
QUOTE
Feeling good is overrated, being in the zone is overrated. Be comfortable, being uncomfortable. Learn how to compete.
- Ken Ravizza
OBSERVATION
Are we helping athletes meet the demand of competition?
The pop-culture of mental skills has always been at the forefront of sport psychology programs. I’m reminded of this as well with virtually every single social media post that goes out on a regular basis. Don’t misunderstand - mental skills techniques are needed, but HIGH PERFORMANCE IS NOT ABOUT MENTAL SKILLS, MENTAL SKILLS ARE A SMALL COMPONENT OF HIGH PERFORMANCE.
If we are working with clients, it’s critical to help our clients keep perspective on how they are preparing to compete. Does their preparation meet the demand?
ACTIONABLE IDEA
Focus on your beliefs around high performance
How you define high performance directly influences your approaches. Your topics on mindset, self-regulation, social-regulation/team dynamics, are all shaped by your beliefs. Even your intake process is influenced by this.
So, in that spirit - below is an exercise to help bring this to life:
What is your definition of high performance?
Where do mental skills fall underneath that definition?
What contextual education (deeper knowledge — mindset, etc.) fall underneath that definition?
How does this influence your intake process?

I see the value in making your concept of high performance explicit and how mental skills fit into that, I guess where I'm finding myself stuck is seeing how that influences an intake process? Is this to be used in the sense that when doing an intake with a new athlete it is to help formulate when and where to implement certain mental skills training?
