Tracking What Matters: The Simple Data Mental Coaches Shouldn’t Ignore
How to show thoughtfulness of your work to others

Observation
We sometimes forget the little things around data
Mental performance coaching is often invisible — and that’s part of the problem. We do deep work with athletes, coaches, and teams... but too often, we lack a visible paper trail that shows the impact of that work.
You don’t need complex outcome measures or psychometric reports to show value. Sometimes, basic data — like participation rates, themes discussed, and session types — tells a powerful story.
Actionable Idea
Get back to the basics
📊 Here’s an example of things you can track each month:
Number of individual and group sessions
% of the roster engaged
Evolving topic themes (e.g. role clarity → coping with injury)
Delivery patterns mapped to the performance calendar
Why does this matter?
👉 It helps with budget negotiations.
Example: You can show that 80%+ of the team engaged in services, across multiple formats. You’re not just “available” — you’re integrated.
👉 It supports future planning.
You can identify seasonal patterns, like when athletes struggle most, or what themes spike before playoffs. That helps you build proactive curriculum.
👉 It builds trust.
Head coaches and ADs don’t need every detail of your work. But they do need to see that your work is consistent, strategic, and responsive to the team’s needs.
🔑 Remember: This isn’t about proving your worth — it’s about helping others see it.
