OBSERVATION
Educating on research and science behind models is too complicated
Whether presenting or conducting team sessions, we do too much. We make athletes work way too hard.
Today we are going to talk about:
“Individual Zone of Optimal Functioning”
“The three key principles of imagery”
“The importance of process goals”
“Self-Talk”
It’s jargon…we spend 15 minutes providing “context” on all the wrong things (as it relates to our athletes). The science behind the model, the research that has been done. The assumption here is that the athletes - or even coaches for that matter are so highly motivated to learn, that they will push through the scientific jargon and still be eagerly awaiting the application.
Don’t put them through that. The application is the context they need.
AN ACTIONABLE IDEA
Save the science for the select few that are interested (or peer discussions). Lead with logic and application.
When working with groups - design sessions around the application or logic. For example, if you are attempting to teach focus skills, make it within context of the competition first. Below are a few examples:
“Today we are going to look at how to increase consistency while hitting”
“Today we are going to discuss how to get more out of film study”
“Today we are going to look at how to get more out of grading film”
“Today we are going to work on 4 ft putts”
Point is this. Utilize the tasks that your clients need to perform as the “lead”. Immediately they understand what you are trying to support and then the mental skill you are providing them becomes much CLEARER to implement.
