On the importance of learning
“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn”.
- Benjamin Franklin
OBSERVATION
The role of learning and sport rarely moves beyond Growth Mindset in both the field of sport psychology and athletic culture. We almost repel the discussion about “education”. I mean we are applied practitioners, not classroom teachers after all. However, we are missing out on a big element if we don’t embrace it. Kids today, just don’t understand how to learn. Athletes are conditioned to over-emphasize mistakes and lack the understanding of how their strategies are really impacting our outcomes during competition. This creates a lack of perspective and poor critical thinking skills.
ACTIONABLE IDEA
Establish sound reflective habits to improve learning and confidence
- Negativity Bias
- Locust of control
Two common challenges to the learning curve. Break practices and competitions into tasks and have them reflect in a manner that strengthens these two principles.
What aspects of the task went well and what aspects of the task went poorly?
What strategies were you using during those tasks?
After this is established, you can then move forward to reflecting on more sport specific nuances and mental skills. Watch their excitement grow as they become their own advocates for how to replicate success and fix mistakes!
You are literally involving them in a more active approach to their growth and development.
