To live without a philosophy, is to sail a ship without a rudder

OBSERVATION
The common Tools > Strategy mentality
Out of school, we are on the hunt for skills and strategies. It’s all about the latest craze of techniques and at conferences, we bemoan the lack of evidence-based skills training. It drives a mindset of imposter syndrome if we do not have enough techniques to feel credible or sustainable. This is a fools errand. Yes, we need tools, but the tools we need should be based on how we approach training. Otherwise, its the equivalent of using technology. Are you using technology to enhance your approaches, or are you changing your approaches to fit technology?
AN ACTIONABLE IDEA
Don’t chase the flashy toy, build your compass
Think critically about how you view high performance and the core themes of what todays performers need. Below is an abbreviated version with a couple questions and examples from my coaching program to get you started.
What is the most common challenges they face?
Ex: Today’s athletes train on autopilot, with little thoughtfulness behind their repetitions. This leads to lowered awareness and lack of ability to understand what skills truly drive their performance success.
What do they do well? What does it take to achieve high performance?
Ex: High performers practice deliberately. They have clear intention behind how they are training, which makes it easier to maintain confidence and problem-solving abilities.
Put it all together: What is your philosophy?
Ex: Athletes need to have focused reflective habits and set clear intentions to be successful.
(How this might look in action with clients: I may roll out a routines based program foundationally when I train teams, or when I work with individuals I may assess routines and goal-setting habits)
Now - my consulting has started to become more consistent and reflective of my philosophy. Once that is in place, now all the fun tools I’ve collected can be delivered more deliberately.
