On transitions
Change is inevitable, growth is an option

OBSERVATIONS
Embrace uncertainty, expect increased difficulty
Transitioning from high school to college or college to pro, we hear the examples time and time again. Athleticism, speed, information. It’s all exponentially more then the previous level of competition. I’ve noticed that many athletes attempt to hold onto the past in attempts to channel confidence and motivation in times of difficulty in their new situations. This is a fools errand if not channeled appropriately. You can’t go back, its a new normal. The reason competition felt easier is because it was easier.
So, in order to help clients make smoother transitions, we can really help them out by “embracing the unknown” and “focused learning habits”.
AN ACTIONABLE IDEA
Learning + Mindfulness
Mindfulness. Teaching people self-compassion with the anticipated unknowns of the next level can really help. Be thoughtful, have clear intentions, and for pete’s sake - accept difficult emotions that are inevitably going to pop up. New people, higher competitive level, its difficult for most.
Learning. We need to double down here. It is attention to detail that separates high achievers form low achievers (it’s not our job to entertain talent in these types of conversations). Looking at how our clients like to learn, recognize how this fits within their sport at the next level. Memory and Recall, Fighting Bias, Locust of Control. All fair game here.
Be mindful and emphasize learning. You’ll find yourself able to be highly creative with helping clients transition if you can keep these concepts in mind.
