OBSERVATION
Graduate school is just the start. Knowing how to continue your education is what matters
We have all been there. We leave school, feel like we gained little knowledge and feel unprepared to go out in the field. Some of this is the responsibility of the school to elevate its approaches to graduate training, however for us - understanding how to develop ourselves professionally can take a lot of pressure off. A few weeks ago, I mentioned using our clients to help us expand our approaches. By studying common athlete challenges it can help us be more creative with how we support and educate them.
As an extension, those common challenges can also guide us to areas of psychology we need to study more closely.
ACTIONABLE IDEA
Expand beyond sport psychology literature
There are cognitive and social demands of playing sports. For today, I recommend looking at cognitive psychology literature for inspiration around a few common need areas of athletes:
Managing attention, arousal, emotions, and memory
Book Recommendation: Cognitive Psychology Textbook
I recommend the book as it is a great introduction to how concepts are discussed from more of a brain perspective. This can be a wonderful compliment to the perceptions perspectives that we tend to utilize from counseling literature.
Enjoy!
IMPORTANT UPDATES
On Feb 1, I’ll be re-launching a platform to better support graduate students and new professionals. There will be different options depending on what your goals are (creating private practice/business, expanding tools/strategies for consulting, etc.). Each of which provides access to curated video library, short lessons, downloadable PP exercises, and coaching/advising support options.
See the link below for more details and I’ll send an update when ready.
The Mental Performance Institute Membership
Thanks!

Hey Russ, thank you for the reminder to continue our education beyond graduate school. A course that I completed last year that I thought was helpful was a neuroscience course from Dr. Sarah McKay. She provided some very high quality content and a fantastic library of resources. I also liked how she busted some neuro-myths such as the triune brain and learning styles.
