OBSERVATION
No process and too narrow
Too often we treat groups like we do on our internship. We get introduced to the team and the players and then work to figure out how to support. It’s reactive and quite difficult. Conversely, for those that used an assessment, we typically utilize a mental skills assessment. It’s too narrow. Leading us down a very short path with not a lot of options. Either way is difficult. Having an assessment process that can easily break down common athlete needs (not mental skills), provides us a much broader, flexible set of options to present back to coaches. And these options are already translated into language coaches understand.
ACTIONABLE IDEA
Identify common needs and create an assessment around it
Look at common areas of athletic needs. For example, focus, motivation, confidence, learning, etc. These types of areas are broad and can organize a variety of common needs underneath them. So - identify 2-3 key factors within each area that are important to you and before you know it…you have yourself an needs assessment tool. It’s simple, powerful 12-15 questions that doesn’t box you in and allows you to create a collaboration that makes sense to coaches.
Combine these “performance factors” with the traditional needs/wants/goals and you have all the context you need to start presenting thoughtful options for group work .
