Welcome back everyone! Below is the new format for our newsletter going forward.
We will feature:
Quick hit of the week. This could be an observation, shout out for great work in the field, or great read or useful research.
Podcast. Each week, the podcast will be connected to the newsletters to gain access to in-depth interviews or solo takes on topics. First podcast episode debut’s 10/7.
Upcoming events. This will stay the same. Event information for weekly coffee talk or monthly special interest topics.
Resources. This will also continue. I added this during the spring updates and would like to continue it so you can access video resources, etc.
So…welcome back and enjoy the first newsletter of the fall series.
Quick Hit of the Week: Perfectionism in business = no business
Over the last six months, I’ve had quite a range of mentee’s for CMPC mentorship. All with vast experience level differences, but I’ve noticed a trend lately in the one’s attempting to consult independently. Overthinking.
Now believe me, I don’t use that term lightly. It’s a real thing and it’s something we all deal with an a daily basis. After, this isn’t just a job for many of us. It can be a very personal reflection of our professionalism and work ethic, so we want to be confident that we are prepared to support our clients. The challenge, however lies in this question:
Are we holding ourselves up from executing what we know we can do today, in pursuit of the perfect program, assessment tool, technology, or trying to figure out what will “sell”?
The reason I ask this question is that I’ve noticed a trend in needing to have everything “done”. This is a fool’s errand. There is always something to do and this cycle never ends. Whether it’s refining worksheets, updating intake processes, testing new programming or courses - you name it, we all go through it. The key is to hit pause and start building this into your workflow. Because your clients will give you all the information you need to decide what to do next. But for now, recognize what you can do today. Get good at that, run with that. In the meantime, take note of your ideas and what you want to do. Start building them into your workflow without screeching your consulting opportunities to a halt.
THE PATH AHEAD
No matter who is reading this, there is one thing we can all execute today:
Coaching services. Whether it is individual or group. Make sure your process for coaching is in place.
Intake/Assessment, Collaborative planning with your client, a method for monitoring progress to support your client.
Build out resources to support this process
Establish a rhythm to managing first meetings to introduce your coaching offerings
Weekly workflow. Outside of seeing clients, build research and reflection into your week. This will keep you making contact with new opportunities, while gaining the information you need to decide future creative additions or revisions to your approaches.
Ex: Mondays are emailing and research days. Tuesdays-Thursdays are coaching days. Friday is reflection and more research.
That’s the basics. Develop and refine the rhythm of consulting first. You can continue to elevate, refine, and expand over time. You don’t need a fully polished set of anything. You just need a process to follow to get into the rhythm.
